They were a.547 team in the fourth quarter of games where they had a lead of six points or less. That number dropped to.326 when they held a lead of six points or more. They had nowhere to go but out of the playoffs in a five-game first round sweep. They also ranked 21st in the NBA in defensive rating and that was without Al Horford. It’s almost shocking that the Celtics made the playoffs in the first place. But when you look deeper into why they lost, you see the problem. Per NBA.com/Stats, Horford had the 12th-best defensive rating on the team and he was the only player on the roster who was an above-average defender. Horford’s lack of defensive impact was magnified by how poorly the Celtics overall defended. They were last in the NBA in defensive rating, and it was primarily Horford’s fault.
